Described as one of the seven man-made wonders of South West England, the Wells Cathedral really was a marvel of intricacies. Elaborate carvings in sandstone and marble on walls that seemed to stretch above your head like the heavens themselves. The little town of Wells holds the oldest continuously inhabited street in all of Europe (it leads to the cathedral). One of the cathedral’s hallmarks is an elaborate set of scissor-like arches designed in the 14th century to keep the church standing due to settling beneath it. Photography required a permit so I’ve included a professional photograph of these.
